Franklin D. Roosevelt served two terms as governor of New York and administered the state's initial response to the Great Depression. He is remembered for advocating social security benefits for the elderly, unemployment insurance, aid to the state's farmers, reform of utility rate-making policies, and development of the state's hydroelectric power resources. In addition to these topics, Roosevelt's subject and correspondence files document the governor's oversight of investigations of inefficiency, incompetence, and misconduct on the part of state and local government officials.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born on January 30, 1882, in Hyde Park, New York. He was the son of James (lawyer, financier) and Sara (Delano) Roosevelt. He married Anna Eleanor Roosevelt on March 17, 1905, and had six children: Anna, James, Franklin, Elliott, Franklin Jr., John.
